Here’s 8 interpersonal communication competencies you must
have in order to achieve success for your organization and
yourself. Rate yourself in each category from one (poor) to
five (greatest) – and see how great “you” are. Put your rating
in the box.

1. First Impression: You create a favorable first
impression through your attire, body language, eye
contact, posture and voice.
2. Likeability: You put people at ease by exhibiting
friendliness, warmth, and genuieness. You always
treat people with respect.
3. Listening: You are empathetic, patient, letting others
speak; able to accurately summarize a person's point
of view.
4. Speaking: You communicate effectively one to one,
in small groups, and in public-speaking situations. You
are able to convey a message clearly and concisely.
5. Writing: You write clear, precise, well-organized
e-mails, memos, letters, while maintaining an
appropriate tone.
6. Team Player: You reach out to peers. You are
approachable, and have earned a reputation for
supporting your team's mutual values.
7. Customer Focus: You meet internal and external
customer needs in a way that provides an excellent
result for the customer.
8. Influencer: You know where to go to get things
done and you build informal networks that provide
information sources and influence.

32-40
You’re well on your way to becoming an expert communicator.
24-32
You’re not doing as well as you might think. You
need to put more time and effort into your personal
development.
16-24
You’re mediocre at best. Work on improving every
day or you’ll see others move ahead of you.
8-16
You need help fast! Don’t delay, start making daily
progress now.
